You are: The Wise Owl

Illustration of the Wise Owl character

You know your limits and rarely come close to reaching them. Maybe you paid attention in health class. Maybe you had an early experience that shaped you. Maybe you are just smarter than everyone else.

For you, alcohol enhances an experience—it’s never the main activity. You’d rather watch Game of Thrones while sipping a microbrew than play drinking games with cheap, warm mystery beer.

Hopefully you surround yourself with likeminded people, who drink in moderation or not at all. You can enlighten your friends by inviting them to drinking-optional things, like a pitch-in dinner, craft night, or game-day party.

Your party strength

You pace your drinks with a watchful eye.

Party smarter

Use these party tricks to keep yourself and others safe.

  • Have Uber and Lyft accounts set up on your phone.
  • Calculate your BAC with an app on your phone.
  • Be aware of the legal risks associated with underage drinking.
  • Be aware of university alcohol policies.
  • Pace drinks: one per hour.
  • Know the alcohol content and serving sizes of what you plan to drink.
  • Have an exit plan.
  • Count standard drinks to keep track of how much you’re drinking.
  • Measure the number of shots before putting liquor in water bottles.
  • Determine in advance not to exceed a certain number of drinks.
  • Do the right thing if a friend passes out. Call 911 immediately, put them on their side to prevent choking on their own vomit, and monitor them closely until an ambulance arrives. If they stop breathing, perform CPR or find someone who knows how.
